Synopsis

He grew up with no name, no family, and no explanation for the wooden box he couldn't open.

Twenty-two years old, aging out of an orphanage, delivering packages across Manhattan for cash. That is the whole of what Adam knows about himself. The box has been with him since he aged out at eighteen, four years now, no latch, no keyhole, no seams he has ever found, just a gold crest scorched into the lid worn smooth from years of his fingers finding it in the dark. He has never been able to open it. He has never been able to put it down.

For three weeks he has known he is being watched.

Then a stranger with silver hair comes through his fire escape with four minutes to spare and a name that isn't his. By the time they hit the alley his apartment is wrecked, two mercenary teams are hunting him through the city, and a silent aircraft bearing a sigil that does something to his chest is circling above the roofline.

By sunrise he is standing in front of a house his body recognizes before his mind does.
